At UTCVM, teaching is job one! For over 45 years, the education of the next generation of veterinary students has been our driving mission. Not only do we provide opportunities for students, but we also serve pet owners, regional veterinarians, and the livestock industry; protect public health; enhance medical knowledge; and generate economic benefits to the state and nation. A robust veterinary medical center, veterinary public health program, and comparative and experimental medicine graduate program also enhance the education and research efforts of the college.

UTCVM Educators: We believe that teaching veterinary students is a group effort supported by faculty, house officers, veterinary technicians, and our college staff. Our preclinical courses are mostly team taught by content experts, as are our clinical rotations. Teaching on the clinic floor involves the entire clinical team. UTCVM educators also facilitate application-based (or problem-based) learning exercises with small groups of pre-clinical students and integrate simulation exercises with these and other courses to prepare students for clinics.
Educator Development: The UTCVM Master Teacher Program (MTP) was launched in 2008 to meet strategic goals in strengthening teaching programs. It was created in the teaching academy model but has evolved to an institutional community of practice. Participation in the college’s MTP is open to all and offers ongoing professional development toward mastery. We seek to provide the resources, programs, and leadership that support the highest quality of professionalism and instruction within the various educational missions of the college. The program coordinates monthly seminars and discussion sessions, as well as occasional workshops and travel grants. A unique feature of the UTCVM program has been the inclusion of college and teaching hospital staff, along with faculty members, as key participants and contributors to the conversations. Additionally, “Fundamentals of Classroom Teaching,” the first in a series of online MTP professional development courses for faculty, staff, or house officers, launched in early 2020 for UTCVM personnel; completion of the course provides a certificate in veterinary education.
The MTP serves as our local SEVEC branch organization and shares a number of its sessions through Zoom and lecture captures. Learn more about it here!
